Sephora No!No! Review

Update: January 7th 2008

Hi All,

Hope you all had a fantastic holiday break.

I took the no!no! with me on my two week vacation so that I could zap those hairs but I soon learned that no!no! and small hotel rooms aren’t a good combo – specially those with only two windows. I didn’t no!no! as I regularly do at home but even with the less applications and letting some of the hair grow back in I can see bald patches, slower (much slower) regrowth, no ingrown hairs and I’m not completely sure about this but it looks like the hair may be coming in finer – probably not but it looks and feels less hard. So far so good with hair reduction.

I experimented with the no!no! on my upper lip during my vacation and I really can’t tell yet if there are results. The hair there grows really slow, so it will probably be a bit more before I can report my findings on hair reduction in that area. At this time I can report that it is very difficult (at least it was for me) to use the no!no! on such a tiny area and so close to my nose (icky burning hair smell). I realize the no!no! isn’t for use on the face (and they say so in their manual) but I thought I’d give it a try after reading some of the comments below as well as emails from those using the no!no! with good results on their face.

One more thing before, I wrap this up. It’s really hard to tell when the no!no! blades need to be replaced ( there are no end of life indicators) and that has been one of my complaints about the no!no! since the beginning. Last week when I no!no!-ed my legs, the hair wasn’t being removed as it had been previously but it was still working just not as well. I ended up going over the same area several times which resulted in scrapes and slight burn – sort of like rug burn when it dawned on me that the blade was probably dead. I was not at all pleased with that. Hopefully, the second product design iteration will make it EASY to tell when blades need to be replaced. The Zeno acne clearing device which I own signals when the zeno cartridge tip needs to be replaced so I know that the technology is available.

I will reply in the comments for those of you who commented while I was on vacation – some time this evening after I return from work.

Update: March 2, 2008

I’ve been using the no!no! since October 2007 and can now report on the long term effects. Those of you who have been following this review know that I exercise cautious optimism – waiting for long-term results even when I was very excited about the short term results. Having used the Sephora no!no! for about 20 weeks I can confidently state that the no!no! does reduce hair density in the long-term. I love this product and am absolutely floored by the results that I now see.

Since the end of January I have been using the no!no! only once a week (even when there is no hair – just treating the area – I probably don’t need to but I’ve grown accustomed to the process) and the few remaining hairs on my arms takes weeks- WEEKS – not days but weeks – almost three to be exact to see the little hair that is left return. I would say that by week three less than a quarter of the hair has returned. There are of course the resistant little boogers that keep coming back but the overall reduction is amazing and I am very happy.

Leg hair has been reduced by about 45%-50%. I now have some hairless spots on various areas of my legs where the hair just isn’t growing back – period. The hair that does come back takes a very long time to grow in. One note here: Even though I can’t see the hair my leg skin feels stubbly by day three or four but there isn’t any hair there. Wierd, I know, specially since my arms stay very smooth.

I love the no!no! and will stick with it as I am seeing wonderful results both short-term and long-term. As a matter of fact I was so elated with my arm results that I decided to revist using the no!no! on my face. Recall that earlier I had tried it and hated the experience because of the smell. But truth be told I am getting acclimated to the burning hair smell and decided to give the upper lip area another go. If I could get the same results as on my arms and legs I’d be in beauty heaven!

Last week I took the no!no! to my upper lip. First I made sure my skin was super clean and ultra dry and I no!no!-ed away. It hurt like hell and my upper lip was a canvas dotted with raised angry red bumps – as I glided the no!no! across the area. So determined was I to achieve hairlessness up there that I tolerated the pain. Reminded me of the time I subjected myself to collagen lip injections as a lunchtime lark with some of my gal friends. It hurt that bad and too boot I even ended up with a poofy upper lip – just like collagen without the price tag. My upper lip was quite plumped for about three days. I had to use extra concealer to hide the redness above my lips for about two days.

The first time I no!no!-ed the upper lip I didn’t experience pain. This time was probably different for a variety of reasons. The first being that I had a professional level glycolic peel a day before and my skin was probably very sensitive. The second being that I had used a new hot blade. I’m thinking the answer lies in the glycolic peel and real sensitive skin.

I know that the no!no! is not indicated for use on the face so I’m not recommending or even suggesting that you give it a go. I’m just sharing my experiences.

    Hi Millie,

I’m glad that reviews by those using the no!no! on facial hair has helped. There is a new review (cross posted comment from colleen)at #70.

    Hi Shelby,

My advice is to first check with your MD he/she can better direct you with regards to your specific skin concerns and the use of the no!no!.

    Hi to you, ms. distressedDerma,
Let’s face it, I know I have spent lots of money for things that are NOT all they say they are, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done that. I sure appreciate all the information. I’m going to save this site so that I can post my experiences with the NO!NO! when I get it. It’s so great that we as the public can ‘tune’ into sites like this and get an idea of whether what a product claims might be true before we make such an expensive purchase. Thanks to all of you!

Has no!no! been tested on the tummy? Or has Sephora said anything about the usage on the stomach/back?

So…it sounds like this device is somewhat useful, but it doesn’t do as good a job as the commercial models…is that correct?

My question then is, Where do I purchase a commercial model? I’ve heard professional “laser hair removal” is somewhat painful–which tells me they’re probably more powerful. I’ve heard they completely remove the hair–for many months.

Has anyone thought to investigate where to purchase such pro grade devices? Would LOVE to know. Thank you,

    Sarah Says:

Excellent question, Ryan! I too would love to find this out. I’ve been to half a dozen places and their equipment is big and powerful. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that “real people” could buy one of their gadgets. I mean, these businesses I’ve been to are often tiny establishments, focusing mainly on nails. But their hair removal techniques are high, high quality.

Anyone know where to buy one of these professional grade lasers? I’m sure it won’t be cheap but if it works–like salon quality…

    Hey,

You really rock! Thanks so much for this review. I’ve been browsing the internet trying to find feedback on this device and your eight week experiment and the experiment on if the hair grows back when you stopped using it was so thorough. I just made an appointment to get laser hair removal which was going to cost over 1200$ dollars and ran into this from watching the Montel show and it appeared as a link somehow.

I’m excited to save all that money, be able to do this at home and not be tortured by lasers.

Thanks so much, you saved me a ton of money and I’ll be buying this now.

The company should send you a lifetime supply of blades and any new models they come out with for free!

Hi millie, A, Ryan, Sarah, agoldenrose,

Sorry for the delayed reply to comments – the flu got me. Now that I’m feeling better i’m back :) .

millie, I’ve been burned by high price useless products in the past too, it sucks :( That’s why I started this site, mostly to help others who are suffering with adult acne and wrinkles from spending money on worthless products – the sephora no!no! isn’t something I would normally review but the promise of less hair (long term) with no pain captured my attention so I asked for a tester and the rest is history. I am excited to hear about your experience with the no!no! when you get it.

    A,
The no!no! can be used on the tummy. A couple of readers have emailed me and told me that it has been very effective for them when used on the strip of fine hair from the belly button down.

Ryan and Sarah, the no!no! isn’t a laser more like electrolysis. Typically medial or spa strength products are not sold to the public due to safety concerns. I haven’t used laser or professional electrolysis so I can’t compare the no!no! to either professional treatment. For me it beats waxing and shaving.

Goldenrose, thank you for your kind words. It’s been a fun review to do and write about. I’ve also got some great tips from readers – one was a life saver. She suggested that I burn fragrance candles during the no!no! session to help reduce the burning hair smell I so hate. Did it and it really helped. Once I catch up on my “real job” work I will return to distressedDERMA to write up a summary of the no!no! review which will incorporate tips, advice and questions from these comments and the hundreds of emails I received during the review period.

Do you know if the no no can be used on the neck? My daughter has some hair growing in different areas of her neck…not alot, but enough that she is self-conscious about it…

    Thank you!

    B Says:

I’m curious why you think no!no! won’t ever remove all (or very close to all) hair, if you kept using it long enough. If it permanently removes some hair (I know, the aren’t legally allowed to call it “permanent”, but don’t we think it basically is?) then eventually wouldn’t it all get removed if you just kept using it on whatever hair grew back?

    ms. distressedDerma Says:

    Hi Denise and B,

Denise, The no!no! device manual states:
“Avoid using the no!no! on blemished skin, moles, scars, cuts, bruises and blisters.

Do not use the no!no! on your face, breast or genitals.”
I didn’t see anything about usage on the neck so it can probably be used.

B, I would love to have the no!no! permanently remove all the hair and I hope that it will with continued use however the company that makes the no!no! states that it only effects reduction in hair density not permanent removal of all hair. So when I say that it doesn’t permanently remove all hair it’s based on their statements.

I will be updating this review at the six month point (late March) with information on how continued use of the no!no! over a longer period effects hair reduction.
