University of Cincinnati HealthNews reports that two of their medical researchers are currently testing a new topical acne fighting and acne bacteria inhibiting gel that is:
…designed to reduce abnormal clogging of the pores while simultaneously fighting off certain bacterial infections linked to severe acne development.
The lead researchers Pranav Sheth, MD, and Debra Breneman, MD, are currently conducting trials to determine whether this new acne topical gel is more effective than the traditional prescription acne prevention topicals currently available. According to the UC HealthNews:
The investigational drug is a combination of the retinoid adapalene, a vitamin A–like compound that has been shown to reduce the formation of comedone (clogged pores) and inflammation, and the strong antibacterial agent benzoyl peroxide. Both medications are currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of acne, but they are prescribed as single agents—not a combined therapy.
If this dual-acting topical acne treatment does work it will certainly bring much happiness to those of us who continue to struggle with acne. I didn’t see anywhere in the UC press release whether this topical agent contained alcohol or if it was delivered in a gentler form. I for one have tried Retin-A gel (alcohol base) and it burned and severly dried out my skin. So I hope that the researchers/scientist create a gentle delivery system for this product.
I will keep an eye on this story and report back any news regarding the trial.

“I for one have tried Retin-A gel (alcohol base) and it burned and severly dried out my skin.”
That’s the problem with a lot of acne medications around. They peel the skin (microdermabrasion)and cause redness and loss of hydration.
