Image Obsession

We live in a world in which we are bombarded daily if not hourly by images of perfection. Whether it be flawless skin, large perky breast, cellulite and fat-free tummys, legs and butts – the images are every where. It’s hard enough living up to those images coming from hollywood and the fashion world but now we are also confronted with the quest for perfection in the form of the “ugly duckling” being transformed into the desirable, young, thin beautiful and sexy swan a la Extreme Make-Over or Dr. 90210 style.

I for one have grown weary of the obsessive quest for perfection via plastic surgery and I say that as someone who has undergone two cosmetic procedures – one as a teen and another as an adult. The first as a teen was to correct a physical flaw that I could have lived with but the surgery improved the problem and definitely improved my self-esteem. The second as an adult – was purely for the fun of it – crazy isn’t it? My friends were all getting “improvements” whether on the face or body and I got caught up in the excitement. Needless to say I underwent minor cosmetic surgery just because it was fashionable to have larger lips – despite the fact that I already had nice full lips.

When does this obsessive quest for perfection end? Maybe the end is near because we have reached the point of actually being able to mock the whole obsession to be perfect – as is the case in this cute and quite funny YouTube Video.

    Hi Marenda,

    Thank you.

Love your “Ugly Betty” analogy – it’s perfect :) The fashion world tells us that the impossible size 0 is the ideal and the beauty world tells us that flawless, airbrushed perfection is the standard UGH! Impossible standards to measure up against.
